September 2007
Aloha Friends. October is here and we are looking forward to the change of season. Things don’t change much here but the days get shorter and the temperature drops a few degrees and it does have a different look about it. There was a lot going on in September, here are the photos.
- We volunteer with the Pacific Whale Foundation in their Turtle Strandings program. If a turtle becomes entangled in fishing gear or beached for whatever reason we are sent to help. A few times a year we do a two week watch. If the turtle is injured it goes to Honolulu for medical care. We have, unfortunately, only been called to retrieve turtles that have died. We are sort of the Turtle Coroners. There were no calls for about five months but the day we started our watch this very young Green Sea Turtle was found dead.
- Our sunsets are beautiful and we had some nice ones during September.
- The coconut tree in our front yard had too many nuts and we were worried they would fall on one of our cars. Twelve pounds from forty feet up could do a lot of damage.
- Tree expert Mike climbs up and trims off all the nuts and old branches.
- Lots of tree debris.
- When I came to bed there was no room for me. This happens a lot.
- Our foster pup Rex has a new home. A young lady from Honolulu adopted him. We are at the airport here in Maui about to take him to his new owner.
- This is Krystle, she is Rex’s new mom. I accompanied Rex to Honolulu to make sure they got together okay.
- Another dead turtle. This one had a huge tumor on its head. This turtle weight about 175 pounds.
- These are dive boats off Makena in south Maui.
- Another dead turtle… we can’t wait till our two weeks are over. I feel bad for the turtles.
- A birthday dinner for our friend Kelly.
- We had a great bike ride up to Kapalua. Cynthia is the camera girl for the ride. This is our friend Bill and wife Rubi.
- Bill and Rubi
- I haven’t seen a Navy ship like this one in Lahaina before.
- When Cynthia was at her Reunion in June she ran into a classmate who also lives on Maui, with her husband, upcountry in Pukalani. They also ride so they joined us. This is Dave and Diane.
- Dave and Diane as we cruise through Lahaina.
- Our ride ended in Kihei in front of a burger place with a fifties theme called Peggy Sue’s. Best burgers on Maui without a doubt. This was the annual car show. Lots of fun stuff to look at.
- Cynthia and Diane.
- On opening day of the county fair there is, by Maui standards, a large parade. The Maui Humane Society has a float in the parade with all the dogs being adoptable.
- This is the staging area for all the school bands that were in the parade.
- Maui Pineapple Company had a truck full of pineapples that they were giving out, along with tee shirts, along the parade route.
- One of the marching bands.
- Scouts and ROTC waiting for their turn to line up.
- Maui Memorial Medical Center also had a float.
- Lots of pineapples.
- Maui Humane Societies float is ready to go.
- A family of local entertainers.
- Don’t laugh, when I looked down I could read it.
- The Hawaii Superferry had a float as well.
- The parade route ended up at the County Fair.
- As the parade ended we got to see the sunset from the east side.
- These are foster kids Rex and Pippen
- This is our latest foster family. Mom, Julie, and six babies.
- Hungry babies.
- One of the puppies is very small and doesn’t look as developed as the rest.
- The small one is having trouble eating from mom so Cynthia is helping out. As it turns out Cynthia has to feed him about six times a day.
- Julie and family.
- Kamaole III beach park.
- Entrance (by boat, duh) to Kihei boat ramp.
- Kihei boat ramp. The boats have been complaining about bottoming out and want it dredged.
- What the hell??? Tadpoles! There has to be a hundred thousand at least. Our waterfall may make the national news if they all grow up to whatever and start hopping around.
- Kitty, Leena, looks in the pond as if to say “what the #$@!.
- The pond is aaalllllliiiiiiivvvvvee.
- Our foster pups Ajax and Pippen. Pippen has been adopted and goes to a new home this week.
- The Kihei boat ramp is going to be dredged. This is Maui so I didn’t expect real fancy, expensive dredging equipment.
- This is going to move thousands of cubic yards of sand to a different location on Kam III beach.
- Here are a couple of guys going fishing with their dog. Not what you would expect from Field and Stream Magazine.
- Rosie and Kaiser are napping.
- Ajax with his best friend “nanna” Hannah.
- This is Ajax. He was a foster that was up for adoption until he started having trouble walking. Our humane society is not a “no kill” facility so we took him to our own Vet. It turns out that he has no hip sockets. We have adopted him and he will stay with us until life becomes too difficult for him.
- Its not easy coming to bed sometimes. I have to shuffle some of them around to make room.
- Kitty, Leena, loves to nap in the cat tree.
- Jennifur found a bee. Poor thing, her nose had a bump on it and her left lip was huge and hanging down twice as far as the other.
- Another beautiful sunset.
- And another.
- Foster pup, Pippen, is being instructed to be cute when she gets to her new home. No problem!
- The new foster family is growing quickly, they have been here for over a week and their eyes are starting to open.
- Cynthia is still feeding the small one. Julie has to make sure it is tasty.
- Go figure, another pretty one.
- The pups are starting to look like pups.
- They look like they are getting enough to eat.
- They look like a Chihuahua-Terrier mix. Very cute.
- The one in the corner is the bottle baby and still about a third the size of his littermates.
Aloha for now, we look forward to hearing from you.
