October 2007
Aloha. October was such a difficult month for our friends in Southern California. We felt helpless from this distance but want you to know that you were constantly in our prayers and thoughts. Many of you were forced to evacuate but we have not heard of anyone we know loosing their home, and we are thankful. We hope that our photos will help, temporarily, to take your minds off the fear and worry that you had to endure and are still dealing with even now. God bless each of you.
Jim and Cynthia
- This is Pippin. She is about to go to her new home. We always prepare a Puppy Pack with food, toys, bio-degradable bags for, “you know”, and other fun stuff.
- The puppies are growing. They came to us last month so you have seen some photos of them already.
- There is getting to be less room at the bar.
- Ajax and Leena play together. They sometimes look pretty serious but it is all play. Ajax was a foster puppy but an x-ray showed that he has no hip sockets and therefore is not adoptable. He is now a member of our family and we love him.
- Ajax loves napping with “Nana Hanna”.
- The little one is Eddy. We are adopting Eddy as he has some health issues and will need surgery when he gets bigger. He is only about a third the size of the others now, weighing in at about a pound. The litter is nine weeks old right now.
- Puppies like to lay with their toys.
- Ajax and Kaiser are still trying to figure Eddy out.
- Cynthia is explaining to some of the group that Eddy will be staying.
- Eddy can’t or won’t nurse from his mom so Cynthia has had to bottle-feed him the entire time.
- The cat snuck up on Ajax.
- This is homegrown. It is a bit smaller than the ones from the store but it was so sweet.
- Dressed up and getting his picture taken for the adoption photos.
- Eddy loves to sleep on his mom during the evening.
- This is an unusual decoration for a car. Skirt and shell-top car is parked in Lahaina.
- I’m not sure that this is a low maintenance yard. Lots of coral and shell sculptures. It’s kinda like a southern California cactus garden. This home is also in Lahaina.
- Eddy tries to wake a brother to play.
- Finally it is time to start with real food. It is always funny watching them try to figure out what to do.
- It was “Turtle Rescue Duty” again and my brother Craig and I picked up this poor Green Sea Turtle with a very large tumor growing out of its mouth and up the right side of its head. She was still alive and so our protocol is to crate her and send her via Aloha Airlines to Honolulu for medical attention and evaluation. The time it took from picking her up to her arrival in Honolulu was under four hours. Unfortunately she didn’t survive the surgery. There is an ongoing research study into the causes of the tumors on these creatures.
- There are a lot of chickens running around on Maui and they are fun to watch with their little chicks.
- Oh oh, that car shouldn’t be there. Even with the very slow speed limits people still have some problems. At least know one was hurt.
- The Kihei beaches were closed on and off for a couple of days due to a shark sighting. The reports said the shark looked sick and was very close to shore. The next day we had another turtle call. Lifeguards had found a Gill Lay Net, which is illegal here, and it had trapped two turtles and the Hammerhead Shark. One turtle appeared uninjured and was released the other had apparently drowned in the net along with the shark. This is why the nets are illegal. The Maui News used a couple of these photos for their article. The entire article can be found at: http://www.mauinews.com/story.aspx?id=35445
- Cynthia shows the mouth of the shark. It had some strange parasite thing that looks like some kind of sea leach.
- These parasites were in the mouth and gills. It seems that it may not have been able to eat because of them.
- The turtle was young and under twenty pounds. It was sad as she had no visible injuries and looked like she was in good health.
- Driving down South Kihei Road we had to stop for a Peacock. The bird is lucky I guess, I would think that it might have been run over by now but it is pretty obvious.
- What is Maui with out a beautiful sunset.
- Our California cat, Bubba, is very tolerant of the puppies.
- Ajax and the puppies taking a break with Cynthia.
- It isn’t unusual to have one of these peeking in the window at you.
- Jodi helps to babysit a kitten for a few hours.
- Ajax and Leena sitting in the shade.
- Eddy is telling Bubba about his plans for the place.
- Cynthia and I were asked to help the Maui Humane Society with their annual Halloween Pet Costume Contest. Cynthia was a judge and I took the photos.
- The contest was at the Maui Mall with lots of entertainment for the kids.
- Cute.
- Maui Mall.
- We were awarded a certificate of Appreciation for our volunteer work.
- The kids and costumes were very cute.
- Formal.
- There were a lot of Bees but this one was the best.
- The Judges.
- Hula boy and dog.
- A pair from outer space.
- Football fans.
- Princesses.
- Alice and her rabbit.
- Dinodog.
- Formal.
- Another Bee.
- Dog in sheeps clothing. Too hot.
- Playboy dog.
- Not sure what but cute.
- The bride of pitbulls.
- Yes, it’s a Bee.
- Handstand dog. Very clever costume and winner of most creative.
- Not sure what the hell this is but it is freaky.
- Tortoise spider. It was really kind of creepy to me. Seriously. When the tortoise walked the spider legs wiggled along the floor.
- Biker babe. This was also a bit weird for me. Seriously.
- Scarecrow dog.
- Team Men in Black. Overall winner.
- Our friend Eric was here on Maui for Halloween and went to the street party in Lahaina. This event is so big that you need hotel reservations almost a year in advance. The rest of the photos were taken by Eric. I am not sure exactly what some of them are dressed as but the last in the group were the winners of the annual costume contest. The picture is of "The Last Supper" and you can see them breaking formation on the stage in the lower photo. Very clever and I am sure took a lot of planning and effort, they deserved to win.
