November / December 2007
Aloha. I was going to make an effort to do this monthly rather than combine two months but... oops. We have been through a few holidays, house guests and visitors so it has been a pretty busy couple of months. We hope that the holidays were good to you and we wish you a very Happy New Year.
Jim and Cynthia
- Our good friend Teri comes for another visit.
- The little foster pup Eddy has some health issues. He needs surgery to close a defect in the roof of his mouth and must eat through a feeding tube until the surgery. He must be fed five times per day until he gains enough weight for the surgery. We have a ways to go.
- Teri is amazed at how small he is.
- He may be small but he can be cute.
- He is not supposed to eat regular food because it goes up into his sinuses. Surgery will repair that.
- Cynthia and Teri drove around the north end of the island.
- One of the many beautiful bays.
- Teri enjoying the views.
- A small village on the north-east side.
- We have had some rain so the countryside is very pretty.
- Village.
- Kohakaloa head.
- The road here is just one lane with few places to pass.
- Beautiful waters of north Maui.
- We still have three puppies from our foster litter and these two (white) will be going to Honolulu to their new homes.
- They get a little sprucing up before leaving for Honolulu. Clean and smellin’ good.
- After the bath a nap with little brother is good. Little Eddy is the same age but much smaller.
- Teri and Cynthia take the puppies to Honolulu.
- The pups were small enough to ride as carry on.
- Little Rhonda went to the Cornelio family.
- Teddy went to the Chong family.
- Eddy is staying with us as he can’t be adopted until he has surgery.
- Teri is leaving for San Diego, Aloha Teri.
- Cynthia was driving behind me and took this.
- Eddy thinks he is going to rough up Ajax.
- A little nap in the sunshine is nice.
- If he keeps trying he may get the better of Ajax.
- A bike ride up the west side to Lahaina is always nice.
- Riding through Olowalu offers some shade.
- The coast is beautiful along the west side.
- The Maui Humane Society has an annual fundraiser “Pet Pictures with Santa Paws” and I got to be Santa.
- The photographer donated both time and material. His set up was very nice.
- Our friend Kelly was on the street doing a little “hawking” for business.
- Peter from the Humane Society helped to get the pets and kids organized.
- One boy brought his Jackson Chameleon. Bright green and looks like a mini dinosaur.
- This young lady brought her pet rat “Spot”. I am happy that Hawaii doesn’t permit snakes.
- We had a nice visit from Jennifer from San Diego.
- A new foster pup is named Jade for her eye color.
- I really fell in love with Jade and we were happy when our next door neighbors felt the same way and adopted her. Whenever she sneaks out of the yard she runs over here so we get to see her with some frequency.
- This is a busy street in downtown Honolulu. Cynthia took our friend Kelly there for some foot surgery.
- Honolulu can be interesting as the guy on the right clearly shows. Yea, I meant GUY.
- Our heavy rains made the national news. “The Storm of 07” It rained very hard causing flooding and power outages. We were lucky that there was no loss of life from the storm.
- About two blocks from us this road was blocked. I thought this guy was going to test the water in his 4X but lucky for him he backed out.
- This was not worth trying either.
- If you are familiar, this is the entrance to Maui Meadows. They had some bad flooding.
- Water flowed out of Maui Meadows and across the highway.
- It came out of the development like a river.
- After flowing down the highway it went into a neighbors backyard two houses up from us. All the neighbors helped to divert the water around their house and kept the flooding to a minimum.
- It flowed through the neighbors yard and house and down the street in front of our place.
- A little bit of the runoff ended up coming into our backyard but we were lucky.
- We lost power for 36 hours during the storm so might just as well nap.
- Kihei took a beating from the storm with much flooding. Some of the streets had water rushing so hard it lifted the cars up onto the curbs.
- There was a lot of debris as well which helped to push the cars.
- South Kihei Road was closed almost entirely.
- A small break in the rain brought a rainbow.
- Without power we had to play a lot of cards. Eddy helped.
- Kelly slept.
- Winds were over 50 MPH during the storm so there were a lot of trees down.
- The day after the storm it was beautiful and clear.
- The hillsides were green again.
- It is always beautiful after the rains.
- You can see how green all the islands have gotten.
- One of Eddy’s brothers comes for a play date.
- Eddy is getting much bigger now so I don’t think Bones recognized him.
- Eddy likes to lay in the sun.
- A beautiful rainbow in Kahului.
- My nephew Marty and his friend Josh came for a visit and stayed with my brother. Here we are at a sunset picnic.
- Kelly was camera shy.
- Marty and Josh are deciding on another beer.
- OUCH! Ajax found a bee. I wouldn’t have recognized him, his face was so swollen. He was fine the next morning, mom does good doctoring.
- Cynthia and Richard Chamberlain. He was doing a book reading for the children and Cynthia was volunteering with the Humane Society doing gift wrapping.
- Martin Rabbett, author of the book “Forever Buster”, and longtime good friend Richard Chamberain entertain the folks at the new Barnes and Noble in Lahaina.
- While at the book signing my old friend Howie walked in while I was on the phone with Cynthia so we talked for a while.
- These bananas are growing just outside my office window. The view outside this office window is much better than the office view I had before we came here.
- Back to the “big storm”. Firefighters were called to help with some flooding on our street but it was under control.
- Our fire department did a great job during the storm of handling a huge volume of calls.
- This boat broke away from its mooring at Maalea harbor and ended up on the rocks at Kalama Park over five miles away. It looks like it was a nice boat once.
- This huge Keawe tree in Kalama Park blew over striking a car parked on the street.
- Lucky it was parked.
- It was a big tree.
- Not much to salvage from the boat.
- The huge storm waves eroded the beach so badly that the lifeguard station was barley saved.
- S. Kihei road was badly flooded.
- There were few places that you could drive along the coast of Kihei.
- This drainage channel wasn’t built for this volume.
- The houses were lucky they are built off the ground.
- In front of the Maui Lu.
- Where north and south Kihei roads connect flash floods made new channels. It’s hard to see but there are three cars up in the channel.
- The runoff made the water look like chocolate milk.
- At Baldwin Beach Park the surf pushed sand up and covered a lot of the park. The picnic tables are barely showing.
- The parking lots are covered and mud and water.
- It’s not easy to walk through the mud.
- It has been over a month since the last photo of Eddy with a beer bottle. He is growing.
- A molting Green Anole shows some battle scars. Probably from our cats.
- Eddy is in the Christmas mood.
- Friends Howie and Camille came by for dinner on Christmas. Also joining us was my brother Craig with his fiancé Denise and our friend Kelly.
- We were joined by Eric and Barbara who are friends from Yorba Linda on New Years Eve. Eric took these great photos of the fireworks we set off in the street. Yep, they are legal here.
- More fireworks. HAPPY NEW YEAR! Sorry Eric and Barbara… I forgot to take photos you guys last night.
- Eric shared this photo taken by his place. Since the rains the streams are flowing again.
