July - August 2007
Wow, it’s September already. Our summer has been going by quickly. During the last two months we have been very busy with our foster kids, a parade, a fundraising event, a houseguest and a trip to Las Vegas. I am hoping that September is a bit more laid back.
- We had a fire, in early July, in the Lahaina area. As usual the only road in and out was closed on and off in order to fight the fire. That left many hundreds of tourists stranded in Lahaina and Kahului causing a lot of missed flights home or very late check-ins. We rode the Harley up to look at the fire and found that it was pretty bad, burning 2500 acres from Oluwalu up to just south of Lahaina.
- The fire burned across the road right down to the water in many places.
- The fire burned to the tops of the ridges.
- The Maui Humane Society had a “Float” in the Makawao Parade. We helped with the event by providing transportation to the staging area and carrying the banner in front of the Float.
- This is the basic float and it was towed behind a Semi Truck.
- Girl Scouts getting the float ready.
- This is one of the Humane Society Employees, Peter. All of the animals on the float were available for adoption.
- As the parade starts we are carrying the Banner for the MHS.
- This is Petey and he had a great view of the float.
- This is Petey’s view of the Float.
- The parade traveled all the way through the town of Makawao which is upcountry Maui. The entire parade route was about eight tenths of a mile.
- Going through town.
- Parade route.
- We obeyed the speed limit.
- People brought their pets to the parade. Most of them were adopted from MHS.
- I love this lady’s shirt, it says “Peace, Love & Spam”. That’s local.
- Our friend from San Marcos, Dorie, had asked for photos of Lanai and Molokai. This is Lanai, taken from north Lahaina.
- To the right is Molokai but the bonus was such a clear day we could see Oahu which is photo center and low to the horizon.
- This little boy who we named Rex came to us as a foster. His litter mates had beat him up and he needed a safe house.
- Rex is sleeping along side of Gidget who is the last of our previous foster litter.
- Gidget was adopted by a family that lives on Oahu and left a few days after this photo. Her family has sent us photos and we are happy for them.
- While on another Harley ride Cynthia noticed a fire upcountry so we drove up to see.
- Emergency vehicles had blocked off the highway and they were making air drops on the fire.
- The fire was burning right alongside of the road.
- Here is Hawaii’s Superferry. This thing is huge and it was docked alongside of a cruise ship in Kahului harbor.
- The Superferry is having many problems with the local people and tried to start services without an Environmental Impact Study. The Superferry is currently not running and is docked alongside court proceedings.
- In late August we went to Las Vegas for a few days. Yes we were aware that it is hot in August.
- We stayed downtown as we had not seen the Fremont Street experience before.
- The Rio has a great show (short) that is free.
- After the show we ate at their unbelievable Buffet. We needed a bell cart to get out of there.
- We hadn’t seen any rain since early March so it was fun that we had a bit of rain in Vegas.
- We are not used to tall buildings, huge crowds, or really bad traffic.
- There was a grand opening for Fremont East… not too exciting.
- Lots of antique neon signs going back to the forties.
- Looking up the street you can see the temperature sign showing that is was still 102 degrees. Yuk!
- Lots of lights.
- The huge video screen overhead was very impressive.
- There was a lot of entertainment up and down the street. These motorbikes went into the steel ball.
- You can see one of them upside down. It made Cynthia seasick.
- Interesting motorcycle
- Note the steel high heels.
- Big kitty at the Mirage.
- The tiger loves to swim.
- Beautiful cat.
- At night the weird people came out in force.
- This haircut was fairly common.
- His ear ring was pretty big, enough to see his tattoo through it.
- This monkey had a person stuck to it’s feet.
- And you thought all the big guys were here.
- We were soooooo glad to be back on Maui. We have the best sunsets.
- Most every night the sunset is beautiful.
- Dog wash day.
- Hibiscus are everywhere. These are in the back yard.
- There are a lot of baby Green Anole lizards right now.
- It’s time to harvest our homegrown pineapple.
- Fruit holder came from the mainland, we couldn’t find one that cute here.
- Our good friend Kelly stayed with us for a month while waiting for her new place.
- Cynthia getting our homegrown pineapple ready to eat.
- It was just as good as one from the store but when homegrown you get to watch and wait for 18 months.
- Another beauty.
- Another baby lizard in the plant.
- And another.
- Back yard Coconut tree is full so we needed to trim some of the nuts out before they fall on a puppy.
- Two of our kitties enjoying the shade.
- Kaiser and Bubba taking a nap.
- Jennifur is just as beautiful and spoiled as ever.
- Rex and Gidget taking a nap.
- New foster kids. A mom cat and three kittens.
- The kittens are very tiny, only a couple of days old.
- Not much of a handful.
- Bubba is wanting the waterfall to be turned on.
- This is our youngest cat, Leena. This is her favorite place to sleep and her favorite position.
- There were a lot of coconuts after trimming the tree so we just set them out at the curb. It only took a few minutes before someone wanted them.
- More baby lizards in the tree.
- Rex is very cute.
- So are the kittens.
- We have had very little rain this year so just the sight of a rainbow got me excited.
- Leena and one of the puppies, Pippin, love to wrestle.
- They do this for a couple of hours a day.
- Typical view on the floor.
- This is Ajax.
- This is Pippin.
- Ajax and Pippin.
- Pippin isn’t as cute when she naps.
- Ajax loves “nanna” Hanna.
- The kittens are growing.
- This is the mom cat.
- For those who were able to help with the Maui Humane Society’s fundraiser “Bark in the Park 2007”, thank you so much. This is the main tent and stage area for the event.
- Cynthia was interviewed by one of the local TV reporters.
- The doggy agility course.
- The row of vendors.
- The dogs need a place to cool of and have a drink.
- And off they go on the walk.
- Here is Cynthia returning with Hannah and Jennifur.
- Cynthia, thanks to those who helped, came in first place for donations and her team came in first place too. Here she is with Traci, her team captain and her husband Mike.
- Here is Cynthia getting her ribbon from Maui Mayor Taveres.
- The water hyacinth have really been blooming. They are very pretty.
- Some of our orchids.
- Pippin, Rex and Ajax at play.
- A prospective parent requested additional photos of Rex and he is so cute we wanted to share with you too.
- The people asking about him wanted to know how big he is so he is by the toaster as a size reference.
Aloha for now, we look forward to hearing from you.
