January 2008
Aloha. January has brought us some cooler weather. It has been getting down to the low sixties and once into the high fifties. Brrrrrrrr. Now that January is over it is starting to warm up a few degrees. Please enjoy our photos.
Jim and Cynthia
- Charlie and Joan Roberts arrive for a visit. Alooooooha!
- Unusual rock formations on our north side.
- Seating is often hard to find.
- A large north swell arrived and the waves at Hookipa are pretty big. This is a favorite surfing spot with waves sometimes reaching up to forty feet.
- Photographers are waiting for that “monster” wave.
- Joan finds that she is a "little bit country".
- Maui cattle. MMMMmmmmm.
- One of the beautiful churches on the road to Makawao.
- Although we lost a lot of sand to our recent storms Charlie and Joan loved our beach.
- It is a bit crowded from a heavy tourist week.
- A breaching whale makes a pretty big splash.
- Little Eddy’s brother “Bones” came for a two day visit.
- A whale is breaching sideways.
- Way off in the distance another whale is jumping.
- Back in his little cove, Charlie enjoys a cold tea and some shade.
- These rocks are normally not visible but the storms of December washed away most of the sand.
- Charlie really enjoyed boogie boarding.
- Joan enjoyed Hannah sitting.
- Our sunsets are always beautiful.
- We love the sunsets.
- Late afternoon at Keawekapu Beach.
- Evening sun on West Maui mountains.
- Charlie and Joan at Iao Valley monolith.
- Charlie’s last breakfast was “loco moco” – a hamburger patty and eggs.
- You will find chickens running all over the island including here at the airport.
- We enjoyed your stay, Aloha Charlie and Joan.
- Last month we shared some photos of storm damage. This month we drove up country to Kula where they had some severe flash flooding. In this photo the water washed away some of the hillside and caused part of the garage to collapse on the home.
- This had been a small ravine but the water cut into it very deeply.
- The view from up here is wonderful. Here we are looking down on Kihei.
- Water washed away part of this home.
- It is amazing to see all the soil completely gone.
- Jennifur is not happy about Eddy pulling on her ear.
- Jennifur displays her feelings about it.
- One of the parks in Iao Valley.
- We are part of the Turtle Strandings Program here and were called to pick up a dead turtle. This photo is deceiving and we were glad that this turtle, which weighed about 350 pounds, was just resting.
- While riding the Harley to Lahaina we saw a small rockslide. When it happened the dust was so thick you couldn’t see the road. Fortunately we were able to stop, if we had hit one of those large rocks it would have been bad.
- Rain pouring down in one of the many valleys on the West Side.
- There are a lot of beautiful views from the highway.
- Our Antheriums seem to like where they are planted.
- So does the Red Torch Ginger.
- While upcountry we passed a home that has an Axis Deer for a pet.
- The deer stood about four feet at the shoulder, very beautiful.
- This little Green Anole has been living on one of our houseplants for over a month. I spray it with water and he drinks it right away.
- The sun makes some beautiful colors in the late afternoon.
- A very large Banyan tree.
- The last few days of the month brought us some snow at the summit of Haleakala.
- It's feeding time for the Green Anole.
- Green Anoles have the ability to change color to camoflage themselves.
- Cynthia saw a beautiful rainbow over Kahului.
- It took two photos to get the entire rainbow.
- Oh oh, puppies. Yep, we are foster parents again. We just got them, so you will see more of them next month.
- This photo was taken by Maui News photographer Matthew Thayer. A beautiful photo of the snow with Maalea Bay and West Maui in the background. Elevation is about 10,000 feet. Thanks for sending me the photo, Eric.
- View of Hookipa and Kahalui Bay from northeast coast.
- More of the same.
- Quaint country road on the north shore.
- Church overlooking Kahakuloa Bay.
