February 2007
Aloha. February is now over and we can see spring coming. As the days are getting a bit longer and the sun a bit higher in the sky we are loosing the "winter" feel and look. The ocean temperature is warming up and so are the nights. We had another storm this month and another forest fire. Whale season is now peaking so we are having a great time watching them. We hope you enjoy the photos.
- Two friends called at same time from California on our cell phones. One had a question for the other so Cynthia hooked up the Hawaiian Conference Call. It worked fine.
- Purrl is waiting for someone to bust into the case of cat food.
- We went to a beach party at White Rock for friends moving from the island to Washington. (yikes) Weather was perfect, as always for this type of event. Bye Kelly and Linda, Aloha.
- Just down the beach from our party was a wedding party. There was a wedding at the other end of the beach as well.
- Beautiful sunset added to the beach party.
- Cynthia is trying on an outrigger canoe.
- This is a small beach in Kihei with no one on it. You can still find them.
- This is our newest stalk of bananas. Look at the end of the big beam and there is another.
- We had a wind storm with winds steady at 35 to 40 MPH and gusts to 55 MPH. The wind was out of the west and burned most all the trees along the shore in Kihei.
- Along with damage to the trees the strong current caused by the wind took most of the sand from the beach. This happened at the beginning of the month and most of the sand is back now.
- Weekends at the beach park are party time for the local people. This party had live music and a hula show as well. This type of party is not uncommon.
- Bananas are growing.
- Whale season! We took photos of this mother whale and her calf and followed them along the coast north toward Lahaina.
- She stayed close to the shore, no more than 30 to 40 yards out.
- She stopped for her calf to rest just beyond the tunnel and we stopped along the shore to watch her.
- What looks like a bird in the background is another whale breaching (jumping) in the background. The land mass is Molokini.
- Mother and Calf.
- Very lucky picture.
- Whale tail. I knew you had guessed it.
- One of our back yard friends.
- This beautiful view is from a lookout along the cliffs heading towards Lahaina.
- We watched the sea turtles down below.
- Sea turtle.
- A scuba dive boat was anchored in the same area. Look close and you can see the bubbles from the divers behind the boat.
- We stopped along the shore to watch whales again, the coast here is beautiful.
- A pod of whales was swimming up the coast. They appeared to be in a bit of a hurry as they were in constant motion and breathing frequently.
- Same whales.
- Again.
- And Again.
- Last time.
- From the High School grounds in Lahaina the view of the bay is incredible. You can see the stack from the old mill. It is hard to see but there are 3 spouts visible from whales.
- Jennifur celebrates her fourth birthday. Her day started off with her favorite, scrambled eggs, and finished with roast beef.
- Oh boy! Whale Days in Kihei. Kihei’s biggest event begins with a parade.
- The crowds line the streets.
- Classic cars start off the parade.
- Classic Car.
- Classic Car.
- Yep, it’s a whale
- It is the big attraction in the parade.
- Whole new meaning to bringing up the rear.
- A lot of the costumes and floats are home made… I know, it’s hard to tell.
- This lady is a Jellyfish.
- This one is a blue cardboard fish.
- The Princess.
- Our local Grammy Award winner is George Kahumoku Jr., he plays weekly in Kaanapali. The lady is holding his Grammy.
- Spam Man is a local favorite.
- I'm not sure that I get it but hey, it's a costume, a parade and a nice day in Maui.
- Local cheerleading competition team showing off their stuff.
- I’m stumped, but they are cute.
- Kihei Motorcycle club. Nope, I am not a member.
- The Shaka Divers group always looks like they are having lots of fun.
- Lots and lots of fun.
- After the parade there is a festival with live music and a craft fair that lasts all day. Plenty of "ono" food. This picture is from the park grounds.
- Not sure just what this contraption is. You lay on one side, there is a guy playing music on the other side while you wear headphones, the whole thing is being balanced by rocks.
- It spins slowly around…
- As it spins there is another guy making soft deep sounds through this… whatever.
- I think these guys are going to light these things up. Will probably end up with a nasty cough and a huge buzz.
- Another beautiful sunset from home.
- So that’s how they do it. I always wondered where the little snail came from.
- Forest fire in the mountains above Lahaina destroyed about thirteen hundred acres. It was a dry winter so we may have trouble with fires this year.
- Firefighting helicopters battle a hot spot on the ridge.
- Chinese New Year. This is the year of the Boar. We attended a Lion Dance at a Kihei stip mall.
- Lion dancer.
- Lion dancer.
- Lion dancer.
- Cynthia discovers what they eat… Money.
- Buurrpp.
- Cynthia started these nine pineapple plants by taking the top off the fruit and planting. They are doing very well.
- This is the plant in the center of the group. It’s not the biggest but it has a blossom. I’m going with... it’s gonna be a pineapple.
Aloha for now, we look forward to hearing from you.
